For most jobs, no. Utah’s executive branch has 1,080 classified job titles, and 1,058 of them do not list a degree as a qualification. Under the state’s skills-first hiring approach, hiring managers weigh comparable work experience the same way they weigh schooling. County and city governments across Utah have moved in the same direction, and so have private employers like Delta Air Lines, which dropped degree screens from the large majority of the roles it advertises.
The legal floor and the going rate are two different things. Utah follows the federal minimum of $7.25 and has since 2009, and state law stops cities from setting anything higher. Almost nobody in a full-time role earns that. The average wage across all Salt Lake City-area jobs was $34.45 an hour in May 2025, above the national average. Healthcare support work averaged $20.70, warehouse and transportation roles $26.85, and installation and repair trades $30.61. Check the posted pay on any listing rather than the state floor.
No, and the recent numbers point the other way. Over the year ending June 2026, Utah’s information sector lost about 1,100 jobs while construction added 3,400 and education and health services added 5,800. Trades, patient care, and logistics have been the steadier bets. Salt Lake County does have a heavy concentration of computer support work if that interests you, but it is one path among many rather than the only one that pays.
A lot. Hill Air Force Base near Ogden is the largest single-site employer in northern Utah, and Northrop Grumman employs more than 10,000 Utahns around Roy and Promontory. Intermountain Health runs hospitals and clinics statewide and is the largest employer in Utah. Utah County has warehousing and healthcare alongside its tech corridor, Tooele County has distribution centers, and St. George and Logan both have growing hospital and construction employers.
Housing along the Wasatch Front has climbed faster than wages over the past several years, so a single entry-level paycheck stretches thin in Salt Lake County. Many people start in Ogden, Tooele, or the north end of Utah County, where rents sit lower, and commute in on FrontRunner or I-15. Pairing an entry-level job with a short certification is usually the fastest way to close that gap.
That describes plenty of people who are working good jobs in Utah today. Warehouse, food service, and retail roles hire without prior experience and train you on site. From there, a CNA course takes a few weeks, and a registered apprenticeship in the electrical or plumbing trades pays you a wage from day one while you learn. The first job does not have to be the destination.
