Choosing A Path
When Emanuel decided that he wanted a career change he was initially overwhelmed trying to figure out what steps he should take. He had tons of experience in the customer service field; however, he knew he was ready for a change. He was interested in landing a career that provided a sustainable income. Emmanuel shared, “My number one drive is sustainable income but aside from that, there were other factors that helped me in making my decision.”
Emmanuel did a search online for help with finding a new career and came across SkillUp. He immediately chose to get involved with one of their partner organizations Social Capital Builders – an organization devoted to helping youth and adults build social capital with networking opportunities designed to increase visibility, connections and career realization.
Finding The Solution
Emmanuel faced several challenges when he made the decision to change his career. He was interested in pursuing a career in tech and quickly realized that there were many aspects and directions he could take his passions. Emmanuel cited that not having any connections in the tech space, he was not sure how to manage building a network.
“When I changed my career to tech, I faced a lot of challenges. I didn’t even know where or how to start. I was lost. It didn’t seem like I would make it because I don’t really have a close connection with anyone in tech.” Emmanuel acknowledged that “switching careers can be difficult but not impossible.”
One Step Closer
Emmanuel searched online for help with his decision to pursue a career in tech. After doing a Google search he found SkillUp online and that was when he decided to do more research to find out more about how SkillUp could help. After Emmanuel decided to go full speed ahead with his desire to enter the tech field, he signed up to participate in the Social Capital Builders program. He also began attending SkillUp group career coaching sessions. Through Social Capital Builders Emmanuel shared that he discovered, “how to understand my circles (bonds), which ones are important and which ones can get you connected easily. Also getting to know your position in your career and measuring your redundancy, how to identify important people in your target field, approach them in the right manner, and get them emotionally invested in you. Most important of all, keep them [your new connections] updated on your progress.”
Today Emmanuel is enrolled in the GenerationUSA Junior Web Developer program made possible by his commitment to pursue a career in tech using the coaching resources provided to him through SkillUp. When asked about his experience participating in the coaching sessions he shared, “I recommend SkillUp coaching because it has helped me in the past and I know it can help you.”
